Feathered black spirit circles overhead
As I lay in pain surrounded by the dead
The deeds of the day wasted many lives
This small black creature watched from the skies
For it knew just as well as we
That for this hill many of us would bleed
I understood why it would wait
Not for the interest in man and our fate
This bird already knew of our demise
All it needed was to dine
The grains of sand collect in the bottom of the hourglass
and I know I am powerless to stop them
Another day shaved off an already shortening lifespan
another day with no meaning, no reason
Hours pass and one day leads into the next
without a chance to slow the course
The dark spectator descends upon the land
Talons into flesh it rips apart my hand
To the pain, I’ve grown numb
Or else I’d feel it bite away my thumb
I lived and died by my king’s word
In the end I’m eaten by a bird
This is just the nature of war
Leaves you asking “what was this for?”
Nothing can be done about it now
I will return to nature without a sound
This bird’s life shall carry on
Only because I am gone
